Antique French Black Terracotta Gargoulette
A striking antique French gargoulette in dark charcoal-black terracotta, distinguished by its generous ovoid body and elegantly curved handle terminating beside the neck. A small projecting drinking spout completes the traditional form. The hand-finished surface retains subtle irregularities, rubbing, and tonal variation that give the vessel considerable depth and character.
Originally made as a functional water vessel, the gargoulette is a distinctive form of traditional French earthenware designed to keep water cool. The unusually dark finish gives this example a particularly graphic, sculptural quality while retaining the rustic character of Provençal pottery.
